Treadmill Shopping

Last night I went out to my local PushPedalPull store to check out some treadmills since I am thinking about purchasing one. I figure it'll be nice to be able to get a workout in when it is snowing and below zero or when I get home way to late to be running around in the city by my lonesome.

I tried out 3 brands of treadmills, all around the $1500-2000 range. I ran on the new Diamondback 500Tm treadmill, a Horizon Elite 3.3T, and a Precor M9.27. On each unit I ran .4 miles at 5 mph (12:00 miles) to get a feel for the unit and how I run on it.

The Diamondback felt pretty good for its price ($1500) initially. The control panel takes some getting used to and isn't the most intuitive from my viewpoint. After running on it for a while the tread surface felt a bit overly rigid and I felt like there was a vibration to it that I did not like. Overall it's a good unit, but I think my height and weight are a bit much for it.

The Horizon has some neat features and the highlight is definitely the number of programs and the control panel. It's very intuitive and I got started easily. The only drawback for this one is that it is a folding model, so stability of the unit was an issue, especially with my size again. Overall I liked the unit, but I wish it was more stable.

The Precor is definitely the class of the field. I really liked its stability and the tread surface. I think this one feels the most like running outside on asphalt trails like I do for most of my training. The programs are decent with a 5K, 10K, interval and several other nifty training options. The only drawback is the price which climbs to around $2400 retail. I think this is the treadmill that I really want to go with though.

Now all I need is the money...

See ya on the roads,
Yeti
