Absolutely Surreal
That was absolutely surreal! I just went for a late run through my neighborhood (had to get some work done on websites first). I understand why ultra runners say not to let the nighttime get to you. I could see how running on an offroad trail in the dark like that could really wig you out! I don't know how they do it on the Western States 100.It's really warm here still at 78° F and the winds are still blowing pretty strong at about 20mph. Not many people are out, just a bunch of cars heading here and there. Dizzy and I started off pretty well, just going at a nice clip and ran the first mile in just over 10 minutes. The heat was getting to me a bit as I am a bit of a polar bear and I decided to take it easy for the next .5 mi. We turned downwind to head back home not long after my little rest break and picked up the pace to get back home.
The wind blowing through the trees made for interesting shadows and it caused sounds to carry very strangely. I felt like I could hear people and animals moving about in the dark, but I could have been imagining it. The shadows morphing around me were really interesting and made the hair on my neck stand up quite a bit. A great experience and a nice way to end off my day.
Run Summary:
Mile 1: 10:09
Mile 2: 9:53
Mile 2.08: 00:42
Total: 20:45
See you on the roads folks!
Alex
